Selecting your wedding officiant is an important decision – after all, they will have a huge influence on the tone of the ceremony. You’ll want to make sure that you find someone who is willing to perform the kind of ceremony you are envisioning, or who has a style and belief system similar to your own. And of course, if you want to make it legal, you’ll need to make sure that they are legally able to marry you in your state.

The first thing you and your intended bride or groom must do is decide if you want a religious or secular ceremony. This highly personal decision will obviously impact who will marry you. Secondly, your wedding planner should have experience with officiants that are fitting for your union- they have excellent recommendations with personal relationships that can make sure you have the right person for your special day.

Questions to ask your prospective officiant:

  • How much are we allowed to customize the ceremony? Can we write our own vows?
  • Will you marry us even if we are not current members of your church/synagogue/etc? How do we become members?
  • If we are of different faiths, or one of us is not religious, is that a problem?
  • One of us is divorced, does your religion allow you to marry us?
  • Are we required to attend any classes or counseling before the wedding?
  • Will our non-religious friends be allowed to participate in the ceremony, including giving readings, singing, or (if appropriate) taking communion?
  • How will you be dressed for the ceremony?

As a wedding planner, I find the best way to describe the importance and relief that my career carries is by looking at testimonials from real brides. The Knot has tons of reviews from brides and there’s a resounding undertone that having a planner certainly has its benefits…

“I LOVED my wedding planner. She designed my cemeromy and reception spaces and they were more than I could have ever imagined on my own. She was able to get me the best vendors at whole sale prices. She coordinated everything from the rehearsal dinner to the thank you brunch. I live 1.5 hours from where the wedding was held and it was a huge time, money and stress saver to use her.” written by ‘vignesle’ on The Knot

“I wholeheartedly recommend a planner. They don’t just “plan” – they serve as a neutral third party that can settle decisions between family members, future in-laws, etc. Mine keeps track of every dollar paid/owed as we get closer to the day so there’s no vagueness or hidden costs as we go forward. I will be attending my rehearsal, wedding, brunch and having as much fun as the guests because I won’t be worried about a thing. At the end of the day – her fee is going to work out to less than 10 dollars an hour – not to mention calling all vendors, etc. etc. etc. For any woman with a job and wants to still have a life while she plans a wedding, they are worth it!” written by ‘endlessocean’ on The Knot

It’s never too early in the wedding planning process to start talking about your guest list. Before you announce that you’re having 250 people and start verbally inviting people, it’s a good idea to sit down with your fiancé and answer the following questions.

  • What is your dream wedding? It could be a petite gathering or a large bash.
  • Who comes to mind when you think of getting married? These are the people that make your day particularly special.
  • Who is involved in paying for the wedding? This will help to decide which guests they would like to have there as well.
  • What can you afford? This is the ultimate question- setting up a budget will help identify what type of event fits best for you.

guestlist

Once you’ve got these preliminary questions out of the way, and decided where you’re having both the ceremony and reception, you’ll know about how many guests you want to invite. The next step is deciding how many invitations to give to each of your parents. Traditionally, the invitations are split evenly between the two families. However, if the bride and groom share the same group of friends, you may choose to give each of your parents a third of the invitations, reserving a third for yourselves.

You and your fiancé should sit down and start naming the names (and gathering the addresses!) that will make up your portion of the guest list. Make it fun with wine and cheese!

Orchid is growing on us: A version of the purple hue is Pantone Inc.’s color of the year for 2014. It follows 2013’s pick of emerald green.

Officially known as Radiant Orchid, the tropical shade is a color-wheel contrast to green, said Leatrire Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, but it’s not the red that would have been a more obvious choice. “It’s a little different, it’s a little off the beaten path and it’s not a primary color,” she explains. “It’s an invitation to innovation. The purple family offers an opportunity to do creative things.”

And, she said, that is what pop culture wants right now. “People associate purple with creativity and originality — and those are very valued today. We see words like that being used to describe technologies and products that are seen as innovative and with an approach you haven’t tried before.”
